The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza)

The Great Beauty is a film that centres around a 65 year old man called Jep.
i picked up from watching this film that the cinematography is beautiful, with elegant tracking shots of Rome that draw the viewer into the loveliness of Jep's world even if age and experience seems to have robbed him of the ability to feel and see this great beauty himself. As he questions his life, past and present, of lost opportunities not just professionally but personal aswell.

The scenery is amazing and how the film was portrayed in such an exquisite place.The storyline is what got me the most interested, the fact that he lives in Rome a visually beautiful place and all he see's around him is death, it was almost like he was waiting to be taken as well.

What i found intriguing is in a magnificent place like Rome Jep couldn't find inspiration to write a second novel, it was almost like he had given up with his dream after he heard his one true love had died.

One of the aspects that wasn't so 'beautiful' to me, the party's at night.It polluted my vision of an old fashioned innocent Rome, when all the old people were partying like they were 20 years old. and that really put me off.

The religious aspect didn't drip in, half way through the film it came in from the side and just swept you off your feet, took you by surprise and i have to applaud Sorrentino as that was powerful and worked so well.


Although the film was Italian with only English subtitles, i thought that's all that was needed as the scenery, music, images and dialogues told the story.

Light and Shadow Project, example

When the Light and Shadow project was introduced these examples sprung to mind, i find them so inspiring and its so beautiful, although they purely use themselves i cant help but think its a perfect example.

Clay Stop Motion

this may be totally unrelivant to our recent project but i was browsing through you tube on stop motion adverts and this came along, iknow we did real life stop motion (with people) and this is with clay but i found it so amazing and inspiring.

This is my film strip video i created, to start with i did a different one without colour and used a scalpel to carve off the enamel to create the light but it didnt work aswell as bleaching all the enamel off and using inks and water based colours to paint on the film strips, from the example videos i looked at with my video i tried to make a flowing effect, my piece is as much extract but has a theme to it. i really enjoyed making this as it was an individual project and i could really use my imagination to create what i wanted freely, i would say my piece had the outcome i expected and im really pleased, the video was only originally 4 seconds long because i was using stop motion 25 frames a second but in after effects i edited it and put the final touches to it.

i have also added my film strip with the Foley sounds i did later on in my recent Project, the sounds are really broad and, for me bring the piece alive!

Manchester Art Gallery 2nd 200 word piece

The Lady in the lake, Alison Erika Forde 2013
 this piece i observed very carefully and picked it to write about. its of an overgrown woman with hairy legs taking a bath in a lake, it seems she is immune to the stares of the male onlookers. the background is painted so beautifully. i chosen this piece because it captured my eyes with the almost life-like cartoon style feeling. the marks used to paint the trees gives the piece a flowing effect and the surreal story of a woman with hairy legs taking a bath in a lake is fntastic, it really catches you how she could be anonymous to the men watching on.
Forde uses discarded pieces of furnature, most common element is wood to paint her surreal unusual characters on, which all revolves around her recycling nature. From observing this piece i have picked up a dark sense of humour theme making you think with your imagination.
this piece is also colourful, the use of tones to make the piece come to life is amazing, what Forde has done is make the audience see beyond the piece and think further into the theme and her imagination.
The texture of the piece is great instead of paper or canvas she thought outside the box.

The last of the crew, Clarkson Stanfield 1853

i was drawn to this amazing painting because to me its really powerful, its painted so accurately it gives you the feeling of being lost and the painting just eats you up and gives you the impression that your part of the painting, the emotion i felt was sympathy for the lat crew member.

Project 2 Film Strip Example

Another of Len Lyes pieves is colour cry, i really like this pieve because the colour is really uplifting and i love the effect of the dots and other shapes moving across the screen, i tried with my fil strip to make my piece flow across the screen as smoothly as i could.

This piece by Len Lye attracted me for a number of reasons, its so simple but effective with no colour but makes me think how time consuming it mush have been making it a 4 minute video. i love the shape of the marks they attract me and i cant keep my eyes off, almost like a trance.

Our first Project was Pixillation, our objective was to discuss and produce our own stop motion video.
we came up with multiple ideas and planned how to act it all out, this was our final outcome after we editted in after effects, i think we did really well with what time we had, 2 days. We had alot of other ideas we were going to use but we just ran out of time, so if we had longer we would have made a longer video with many more ideas merged in aswell.

For my recent project, i used Foley to add sound to my current pieces of work i had done, i discovered that the sounds for this piece were really hard, it took me a while to find suitable sounds butin the end i would personally say it has payed off i love watching this video and just laughing at how we could have produced a piece of work such as this.

this video caught my eye because for one its about food! the effect of how cracking an egg and revealing another component is fantastic as this video demonstrates, i think the seringe with egg yoak is extremely clever and works really goo, over all a good example of a pixillation video.
