Hang final piece

This is the first hang piece i did, after all the testing i did with tug, snap and swing i merged them all together and i came up with this composition. I am very happy with these results as the rope demonstrates anticipation just before it snaps tight. I also successfully accomplished giving this a 3D look by using the scale in order to give the appearance of the rope swinging back and forth. I am thoroughly excited to complete future projects given. ..........

Swing research

This clip isnt really what i had in mind but simply this is a swing and it shows the dog swinging back and forth and this is what my piece will contain, the letters swinging back and forth to create depth in the piece.

Last but not least was my swing action, i exceeded with this action because i created depth in the piece by using exaggeration on the letters, although with this piece i over exaggerated the swing of the letters and have learnt on my final piece to use more subtle swings to create more realistic action.

Snap research

I found a lot of research material for snap but the clip i found to help me was this piece:

At 3:40 you see a leg get snapped and I found this to help me find the angle I could snap the letter at and how sudden it snaps as well.
I could add a lot more clips of body parts breaking but I think just 1 decent example is enough to draw a better understanding of the action.

Once i had created my tug piece and was happy with it i then moved on to my next action which was the snap of the top letter as the weight pulls on the rope and snaps the 'S'.
This one was really tricky, it was hard to get the snap at the right time and i needed to show the weight and the tension to create the snap action.
But i believe in the end the actions represent the word. I also added a pause at the start to build up anticipation and the overlap of the letters to gain the element of surprise.

Tug research

i Added this clip to show the tension and force of the tugs by the tiger, i focused mainly on how the rope shook and wobbled as the tiger tugged on it. it gave me a better understanding of how to use these effects to my advantage to show what action i am demonstrating in my piece.




i also added this clip to show a more aggressive approach to tugging on a rope but also how the dog swings as well it may be fast energetic swinging but also a good example of both tug and swing in one clip.

Verbs in a verb - Tug piece

I thought how i could get each component in my hang perfect and then i thought hang has other verbs within it such as the 'tug' of the rope, the 'snap' of the letter and the 'swing' of the letters after the impact.

So i thought i would create each action playing their role in my word, for example 'tug' i would focus in on the tug of the rope and tackle how to do this effectively to work in my piece.

The action and tension on the rope as the letters tug on it is how i wanted it, i believe i have nailed this action to show the tug of the rope as the weight pulls on it.

'Hang' pictures

hanging baskets and clothes hanging from a washing line show the swaying of a body when the wind hits it the action of the material and how it behaves reminds me of a body hanging.

crane hanging

the clip i found next looks insanely dangerous, a guy walking along a crane really high up with no support. from 1 minute 30 seconds he starts swinging from each pole with his whole body hanging in the air, the movement of the body is fluent because of the height and the force of the wind.


 

Monkey Man

here is a clip of a man who is like a monkey you see him hanging from a ledge by just his feet its amazing, he can do all sorts but the hanging is what i wanted to show.

Monkey hanging

i was looking for other examples instead of executions or suicides and i thought of monkeys hanging from trees. its really different as a monkey hangs from a tree/vines relaxing and calm but executions are sudden and fierce but still they are both hangings subtle and sudden.

Movie Hangings

i hovered over the internet to look for hanging scenes in movies but not just the hanging the motion of it how the rope reacts when the body falls and how the body hangs and swings after the impact.
i found a few examples that show the ropes reaction and the bodys reaction so its good research to analyse the movement thoroughly.

i found this video because it shows the bodys reaction and the ropes reaction when the men are being hanged, it shows the strain of the rope and the necks snap when the weight of the body pulls down and also the swaying of the body after the hanging.


i also chosen this clip because its a little different to the first. Instead of the hanging being sudden the man here is struggling and suffering making the body movement a lot more active.

'Hang' kinetic verb

For my second word to animate i have chosen hang. first i thought of all different types of hanging, for example an execution hanging or suicide hanging. but that wasn't all i thought of i also thought of hanging from a tree (monkeys), cliff (mountain climbers).

'Slap' extension piece

After doing the first 3 pieces i was happy with i decided to go for something a little different, i looked for other ways slap is used and i came up with something slapping on a solid surface. for example a ruler on a table and i came up with this extra piece. Its really fast but for me it works really well the roatation of each letter and how they follow the previous compliments the piece, simple but effective.

Now this one i did i like more than the others, i changed the layout of the 'lap' to overlap eachother and it looks like a really nice staging and intriguing for the audience to see until the 'S' comes on screen and collides with them. i also added an extra reaction from the 'lap' with them knocking into eachother i think this benefits the action im trying to create.
on the 'S' i changed the arc of how it travels i also used slow in slow out, slow in as it comes on screen and slow out as it joins the other letters i found this to help an aweful lot and it was smoothe.

This was the improved version of my 1st piece.
i kept the same staging and changed certain elements around such as the way the 'lap' reveals, for me its a lot smoother and more realistic than my first try and also the 'S' is more smoother and the increase and decrease of the size of it seems more fluent. For me a huge improvement on the first attempt

'Slap' first outcome

This was my first attempt at my 'slap' piece, having researched into the word this was the outcome i had. the 'S' comes in it starts big and reduces in size making depth into the piece.
i believe i used anticipation well on the 'S' it starts slow coming in and gathers speed and then has the impact of the slap. for me the staging was an issue. How would I start off the 'lap' without giving the word away and breaking the anticipation, so i placed the words in front of each other like so and reduced the size making them appear on a side ways view so when the 'S' comes on screen and slaps them they would react and rotate spacing out revealing the letters.
i studied how a face would react when slapped and i attempted to create something similar with the 'l' and 'a' i stretched them to give them the effect of dragging along with the 'S' i believe i could have done this a lot better but for my first attempt i thought i captured the motion of slap rather well.

The Mask animation principles

First off i would like to say The Mask is my favourite film that combines cartoon animation with real life action. the amount of animation principles used is mind blowing and how well they are done as well.
first off i spot overlapping actions as the clock is bouncing up and down he is trying to catch it using his arms, and also the clock when it is bouncing creates cartoon arcs making it appear bouncy when in fact its a solid object that should not bounce, its giving the object a personality of its own.
Also follow through when the woman is shooting at him and he's bouncing around the hall and and the sparks fly everywhere and the steam comes off the radiator.
The next principle i spotted and is used a fair amount is squash and stretch, its used when the mask pulls the hammer out of his pocket making his pockets appear deeper than they actually are and humorous also its used when he jumps out the window and splats against the floor. he appears to be squashed and thin as paper its used so so well for me the best example i can think of by far.
But for me the winner is the anticipation. when he is about to crush the alarm clock with the hammer how he pulls his arms back that pause of tension shows the weight of the hammer and the force of the smash, but also how the alarm clock shakes in fear knowing whats going to happen my god its brilliant!
Exaggeration is also used when the woman opens the door and the mask see's him and the over reaction of his face when the eyes pop out and the tongues sticks out and how they pop back into his face is bang on, all these used in just this scene alone make up the film how well they have used them all to created this incredible film.

Slap images

for examples i scanned the internet for images that represent 'slap'.

i chose this because its big, bold and makes a big statement it may not carry the action but it shouts out the impact of slap.

 i added this image because it shows the reaction of the face being slapped how the eyes close together and the water spitting out of his mouth shows the force of the slap.

this image is on here because its a cartoon take on a slap its more exaggerated with the crumpled up face and how small and weak the slap actually feels coming from a penguin. you can anticipate the force of the slap just by looking at this image.

i have put these 2 together as i feel they portray the same sort of reaction with the faces acting out the same and the same force by looking at the image. on the first image they have used conventions showing the movement of the hand, so in 1 image it shows the animation of the hand.

ruler slap

apart from looking for a hand slapping a face i looked deeper although 'slap' is dominated by the cliche of  hand and face i was able to find a ruler slapping an arm its related to a hand and face but slightly different. but i wasnt only looking for the action i was looking for the sound aswell. i found a hand or a ruler or any plastic object for that matter can make a decent slap sound that im looking for.
