these are my 2 title sequences i did, i worked on cinema 4D and it was really hard tracing the clip to include my name in, i encountered many problems as this was the first time i had used cinema 4D but i got my head around it and i believe my pieces look really good and creative.

from learning what not to do i created this piece and added various sounds swell, i believe i have improved a lot on this piece and took big steps to creating a really effective piece


i am really happy with this outcome it works really well, the videos i took really express the theme i chose to explore.

for this project i had to incorporate a name on an urban environment so it will blend in and look natural

i chose this example because it blends in really well in the building and also the reflections work so it lives in the environment.

New way of looking 1st attempt

with the information i had collected i put this clip together, my idea was to show the story of how nature fights back and in a way i created that but in a way it didn't. It wasn't communicating exactly what i expected but from this try i can learn.

i decided my focus was to show nature fighting back against man made environment, for example pavement cracks created by tree roots and destroyed walls from growing trees. i took a trip to a local nature park and i captured a lot of photos that supported my theme i also took clips.

 these are just a couple of examples i have included to give a feel of how my project will be heading.

with this brief we had to make a 2 minute film showing something we see every day but don't really notice for example, the day of a pair of shoes, what happens in their life and what goes on, basically telling a story, i decided after a lot of primary research and came up with a theme of 'nature fighting back'. i had taken images and clips of nature pushing back against modern day infrastructures for example a tree root growing under and cracking concrete, a tree growing into and destroying metal fences etc. i also got secondary research and my favourite was the clip in the film Narnia where tree roots destroy the man made wooden catapult at 1 minute 20 seconds it shows the narrative of how I'm approaching this theme.

a point of view

this small brief got me to look closely at things and what i wouldn't normally notice. I looked closer to find and catch a image that tells a story in a single frame by using staging.

 i staged this piece to show a strong narrative, that emotions can't as easily be washed away, i believe this catches that story in this one shot and thats what i set out to achieve.

to show out editing skills we were given various cut scenes and we had to construct them to flow with a voice over we were given to go along with the story. This attempt i added a false start to fool the audience into thinking it was a calm clip, but then it cuts into the tense scene. i also added music i thought was appropriate and set the mood. i believe my attempt was a really decent effort and i found weaving the cut scenes together was really easy for me and i spent my time making the jump from each scene perfect.

straight away entering the website there is a burst of colour and excitement, that is the kind of website to attract viewers and make the website really enjoyable.
 Young is an animation studio whom create work they themselves think is fun and they enjoy, engaging and interesting.
they work directly with brands and agencies as creatives producers of animation. they work on concepts for the animation all the way through script writing, character development, storyboarding, art direction, to 2D and 3D animations. from what i gathered from the website is they are fully engaged with what they do with a lot of experience and skills. they seem friendly and energetic and they are having such fun in their work.

Kilogramme Animations is an award winning animation design company.
founded in 2005 they have produced a huge variety of animations for many satisfied customers within 2D animations, 3D animations and both.
the look of this website is really professional and shows the team there have their heads screwed on and are ready for work.
their work is created for a range of things from internet banners to full length episodes of children's t.v series.
 
i found some of the work they produce really fascinating, really realistic cartoons which interests me greatly. many other work of theirs is on their website ~ http://kilogramme.co.uk/
what i found really impressed with was, they showed techniques and processes they went through to eventually making their animations which makes me think they are really enjoying what they do and it is a good environment to work in.

red door studios is is home to award winning and acclaimed creative people producing a wide and varied digital media established in 2007 the animation studio grew from an animation house to the large studio it is today. the studio undertakes not on animation but also photography, illustration, exhibition design and film creating a varied portfolio of work ranging from adverts to theatre even awareness campaigns. 

entering the website it looks friendly and welcoming, the kind you would want to spend time on and looking at so this caught my eye straight off. 
they have a fully equipped animation workshop and rely on the believable characters and witty designs created. by using traditional as well as digital techniques they create their animations for t.v series, adverts and much more.
when creating animations the crew work with scriptwriters and editors, actors and visual artists to make the piece of art the best it can be. so hugely collaborative.

Paint workshop

we did a paint work shop to test how good our colour palette's were. i was given different topics to research and collect images of that certain theme, for example 'Indian' i would collect a variety of colourful images that represented Indian, then pick out the most favoured colours and put into a palette.

as shown my themes i chose to display are Autumnal and Bank. i simply collected lots of images and in photoshop selected the most common colours associated with that particular theme.

Here for each i picked 1 of 4 palettes and used them to create different colour layouts for this print. i believe this task really helped and made me think about colour a lot more thoroughly. i also believe i nailed each theme with the colours i chosen and im happy with how i approached this task.

void life void essay

This project from the start was tricky for me as I hated the idea of nothingness but i gripped this project with both hands and I believe I created a decent final piece.
This project was massive and we could explore every corner of void life void from the micro to the macro but I chose to work with light, the light of life as my starting point.

I started by looking at all types of light such as the light hitting down into a well, also the sky window created by James Turrell currently exhibited in Yorkshire sculpture park, I also looked at the tree of life. Then i got an idea of people and animals combined with light. I looked at Makoto Tojiki's work with his light sculptures of animals and males, which followed into looking at light sculptures.

I believe all my research up to this point has pushed me into finding Mihoko Ogaki's amazing LED light sculptures. She creates plastic fibre-reinforced models of a human figure and fills with lights to show her theme of life, death and rebirth. Finding this artist helped me a lot as this was the starter to creating my piece. What really caught me about Ogaki's sculptures was how the lights created the image of a person, I found it amazing and I relate it strongly to the essence of life, what creates a human but also how innocent her sculptures seem.

After researching thoroughly I had decided to create my own piece strongly influenced by Ogaki's work. So I started  testing how to make the glimpses of light. I tried holding black paper in front of light and piercing little holes, it worked but it wasn't the effect I really wanted. so I re-thought my idea and how I could make it work, I drew a story board to see what my idea would look like then create a short animation out of it which helped massively because it showed what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I came up with the idea of creating a clay model and flicking paint on to form the illusion of stars inside the body and the essence of life. But then I had another problem, the lighting and how I was going to get the right effect I wanted. So after a lot of thinking i painted my model white and had it placed on a white background and flicked black paint to create the stars. After 350 frames in stop motion I took the sequence into after effects where I inverted the animation so it was black background with white stars and I went through each of the 350 frames and masked out all the shadows to get only the stars. Once I was happy I added the effect of glow which helped massively because the stars looked like they were glowing and it lit up the piece making it look really realistic.

I believe reflecting on my piece I could have done further research into other areas of void life void to get a varied choice of ideas but ultimately I created a really decent piece that, in my eyes represents void life void and that is what I was attempting to capture.

V.L.V final piece

For my final piece i decided to create a clay model and use stop motion to make my main sequence.
Using Mihoko Ogaki's sculptures i created a clay model and using stop motion i created the star effect by using a tooth brush and black ink. Every other frame i would flick a little ink on to create the effect of the stars appearing, it took 350 frames to complete.

After having my base i had to invert it and then go through every frame to cancel out the remaining light to only get the star effect which took a really long time. Once done i put my video in after effect to correct the movement add the start and ending and also add the glowing to make the stars more effective and realistic.
The sound i used was from a baby's mobile, i believed using a subtle sound would represent the piece perfectly.
I believe for this project ceased a good chance to show the essence of life. With the project being void life void the possibilities were endless but i chose to follow this subject, researched, got good ideas and created a really decent piece i believe.
If i could think of a way to improve this piece i would have tried a few other different methods to try and improve this piece.

star light man piece

For a practice, i drew my own sequence to my star man then used photoshop and after effects to put them together to create this short animation to how i would like my piece to look. Doing this opened the door further on how to develop this idea to make it work.



On this piece i simply inverted to create the opposite effect to see what white stars would look like on black background.

experimenting with light!

i took the light figures further thinking how i could create a piece along the same lines. By using Leonardo Da Vinci's perfect man image;




















I have built up a body with starts creating this image of the 'perfect man'.
To test my ideas i did a couple of examples by piercing holes in black paper and projecting light through and observing how it went, if it works, if it doesn't.

These are my results, the orbs are a happy accident. I didn't know how it would turn out and they create a really nice effect that could help me think of other ideas.
Also the holes where I'm trying to create the essence of life could also show decay and death so it shows both sides of the coin, this exercise really helps me on how to develop my idea to a final piece

Light after Death: Mihoko Ogaki

I found this artist really interesting as her sculptures are ideas of life, death and rebirth. created by fibre-reinforced plastic and bright LED lights inside to create the effect of stars inside the body. She names these pieces 'Milky Way' its powerful and makes you think the human form is special looking at how she has approached these.

V.L.V light images

I have chosen to talk about this image as it is so cliche, with the religious aspect its common to be known as the light of god shinning down from heaven. created by British artist Anthony McCall.

 This image is from Harry Potter, it is perceived in the film as a symbol of purity and hope. I have chosen this for an example as life is all about hope and what you make of it.

 I found this image to show how my idea could develop, i could have a innocent animal like a cat glowing while surrounded by the void.

 Following the glowing cat idea i found this image, it says a lot as a static image. In my eyes its such a powerful image and an example of void life void, with the glowing woman in the centre with the nothingness of the void surrounding. Also the streaks show not only movement but the flow of life.

Continuing with my light idea i stumbled across this idea, of a hand grasping a ball of light. I believe the point this image is putting across is we all have our own destinies within our hands and we have the power and freedom of life. I believe this is an important aspect we should remember.

Examples of a void

I added this clip as an example of a white void. Here it is just Jack, his ship and a white rock and nothingness. I think he plays this perfect with his reaction to whats going on.



I added this video to show a cartoon look on a void, here Stewie and Brian are outside the Universe (outside the space time continuum) evidently a void where there is nothing they are just floating and there is no laws of physics.

Light Sculpture

i decided to go forward looking at light and how i could use that to create the life in the void life void.
So I'm playing around seeing if i can symbolise the meaning of life and what would work well.

Makoto Tojiki

i found this japanese artist which uses light to create sculptures of people and animals, they are really well thought out and realistic.

'The man with no shadow' this piece he did is amazing the detail is magnificent the way the light creates the image is clever, but i also noticed this is a good example of void life void as there is nothingness on each side of the sculpture so this also can be shown as an example.

This is also another example of Tojiki's work, 'The horse with no shadow' it is so well created how the lights reflect the lighter and darker shapes of the horse. But also turning to the void life void, it doesn't have to be centred around a person it could be any living thing!

V.L.V examples

I found this example of void life void, as the tree in the middle growing as the life. It seems so pure and beautiful while the both sides are black and dull and lifeless.

 This image really got me thinking, apart from the void life void, it could also symbolise the light hitting down from god, so it has two meaning and i thought it was a really interesting way to think and develop ideas from.

Thinking more of the light from above i thought about the Sky Window created by James Turrell currently displayed at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Its an impressive way to view the sky from as it looks just like a painting , but also like the well images it also can be perceived as a religious symbol.

Void. Life. Void

Existentialism.

there is 3 parts to existentialism, the universe before our life before we have lived. The second part, life, the meaning of life. what meaning we have while we are alive. And finally the afterlife, which is when we are dead, religious people believe we live on but on the other side other people believe its nothingness when we are dead then we are dead.

i have decided to focus on this because it affects me in a personal way, i will connect better this way.
